Why mangroves matter locally

Nigeria has the largest mangrove ecosystem in Africa, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). Majority of the Nigerian mangrove is located in the Niger Delta region. Together with the creeks and rivers, they are a major source of food for many communities, with approximately 30 million people. Yet, the Niger Delta mangrove has faced over 60 years of unmitigated degradation from oil exploration. The wetland region of the Akwa Ibom State is considered a global biodiversity hotspot, and TRCC strives to:

  • Increase community knowledge on mangrove conservation needs and sustainable use.
  • Improve skills in sustainable mangrove ecosystem management.
  • Reduce coastal erosion and flooding.
  • Ensure the reestablishment of crustacean and fish populations, guaranteeing a long-term source of food for the coastal communities.
  • Provide indirect employment opportunities, such as fishermen

Why mangroves matter globally

In addition to developing livelihood solutions compatible with conservation actions, TRCC also carries out tree-planting efforts with multi-purpose native species, and develops educational activities with schools and communities.

Mangrove forests have a strategic function – connecting and balancing terrestrial and marine ecosystems – where plants, animals and various nutrients are transferred to land or sea through mangroves.

They are also our strongest ally in supporting mitigating climate change and further increase in global warming. Dubbed as “blue carbon” systems, mangroves absorb and lock more carbon into the soil than any other comparable natural terrestrial ecosystem.

As a conservative estimate, each tree in this project will sequester over 250 kilograms of carbon over 20 years of forest growth. This is around 5 times more than any terrestrial forest.

Nkanta has over 15 year experience in nature conservation, community education, community forest restoration and management. He is passionate about working with local and indigenous people to pilot projects that can improve and enhance their livelihoods.

Benefits

TRCC purchases seedlings locally, supporting local livelihoods.

Pre- and post-project data is collected and published for audit.

TRCC prevents deforestation while also helping sustain local jobs with community bee-keeping units and ‘economic’ trees — such as fruit trees.

Our methodology is backed by strong science. We use proven algorithms for carbon calculations, and track impact where possible with remote sensing and machine learning.

With our science partners, Global Mangrove Trust and Kumi Analytics, we’re working at the cutting edge of how to measure carbon absorption from space, driving change to make sustainability finance accessible to the humblest communities.

Every X months, a quantified verification report of the impact will be made publicly accessible, making all impact claims evidence-based and scientifically valid.
