Plant baby corals with Livingseas

Livingseas aims to build a thriving marine coral reef ecosystem and train a local community that can maintain it for the long term. To do this, Livingseas constructs, installs, and monitors coral reef stars — manmade structures made with biodegradable materials — each of which hosts 18 baby corals.

Why it matters locally

Yagasu is working together with the local community in Aceh, North Sumatra, and Riau province to increase resilience of the most vulnerable communities and reduce emissions from land-use change. This is a rich forest area with twisting tidal rivers, numerous wading birds, forest animals, and amphibians.

While diverse with plant life, mangroves are at the heart of this forest, performing critical functions to keep the forest alive. Sadly, rampant deforestation has put this area under threat from frequent flooding due to stormwater, coastal erosion, and loss of habitat for numerous non-human animal and plant life.

This mangrove deforestation has also led to loss of ecosystem resources that support livelihoods, secure nutritious food supply, and secure freshwater supply (by preventing saltwater intrusion) for members of the local community.

Why this project matters globally

Mangrove forests have a strategic function – connecting and balancing terrestrial and marine ecosystems – where plants, animals and various nutrients are transferred to land or sea through mangroves.

They are also our strongest ally in supporting mitigating climate change and further increase in global warming. Dubbed as “blue carbon” systems, mangroves absorb and lock more carbon into the soil than any other comparable natural terrestrial ecosystem.

As a conservative estimate, each tree in this project will sequester over 250 kilograms of carbon over 20 years of forest growth. This is around 5 times more than any terrestrial forest.

I’ve been diving for over 15 years, and travelled all over the world to dive. The destruction of the reef is real, having seen it with my own eyes. And without any intervention, the reef does not grow back over time. As the corals die, so does all the fish and marine life that live on and around the reef, rendering the seabed a dead and desolate space. This was how my interest in coral restoration started.

I moved to Bali to become a dive professional at Livingseas. I have been involved with Livingseas’ conservation work in coral regeneration since 2019. I work at Livingseas because I love the ocean and find contentment in helping people experience a new world – like the ocean and marine life – for them. I hope people will realise the importance of corals to our lives and join our mission to revitalise and regenerate coral reefs.

Celine

I am a Marine science undergraduate student at Udayana University, Bali and passionate about science, especially biology. I see Livingseas as my first door of opportunity in learning about marine conservation. Excited about a career in conservation, my mission is to become a presenter for a National Geographic show on Coralogy after building an expertise with Livingseas.

Benefits

Planting and nursery work is supported by expert foresters and a large contingent of local women’s groups.

Pre and post-project data is collected and will be published for open-access public review.

Mangrove restoration will ensure long-term livelihoods for local silvofishery businesses, thereby discouraging deforestation.

Verification

Our methodology is backed by strong science. We use proven algorithms for carbon calculations, and track impact where possible with remote sensing and machine learning.

With our science partners, Global Mangrove Trust and Kumi Analytics, we’re working at the cutting edge of how to measure carbon absorption from space, driving change to make sustainability finance accessible to the humblest communities.

Every X months, a quantified verification report of the impact will be made publicly accessible, making all impact claims evidence-based and scientifically valid.
