Why plant mangrove trees?

Mangrove trees are one of the most efficient organic carbon storage options on the planet, holding three to five times more carbon than tropical upland forests. These trees lay deep underground roots where they store almost 75% of their carbon. Healthy mangroves also offer jobs for coastal communities while protecting against natural events such as hurricanes.

Why support TRCC’s mangrove restoration projects?

Tropical Research and Conservation Centre (TRCC) was founded in 2001, and is active in the Akwa Ibom State and in the Niger Delta. They focus on building the capacity of rural and indigenous communities to facilitate sustainable agriculture and environmental resources conservation.

Nigeria has the largest mangrove ecosystem in Africa, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). Majority of the Nigerian mangrove is located in the Niger Delta region. Together with the creeks and rivers, they are a major source of food for many communities, with approximately 30 million people.

The Niger Delta mangrove has faced over 60 years of unmitigated degradation from oil exploration. As a result, many coastal communities in the Niger Delta are losing their primary livelihoods due to their increased vulnerability to floods.

Why it matters

In addition to developing livelihood solutions compatible with conservation actions, TRCC also carries out tree-planting efforts with multi-purpose native species, and develops educational activities with schools and communities.

The wetland region of the Akwa Ibom State is considered a global biodiversity hotspot, and TRCC strives to:

  • Increase community knowledge on mangrove conservation needs and sustainable use.
  • Improve skills in sustainable mangrove ecosystem management.
  • Reduce coastal erosion and flooding.
  • Ensure the reestablishment of crustacean and fish populations, guaranteeing a long-term source of food for the coastal communities.
  • Provide indirect employment opportunities, such as fishermen
