Why did carbon programs fail to engage bank customers?

Updated April 12, 2026

Carbon programs were built for compliance, not connection. They relied on abstract numbers and guilt-based messaging — users tried once and disengaged. Banks that invested heavily in carbon footprinting and offsetting saw engagement flatline and retention stay low.

The core problem is that people don't connect emotionally with carbon. It's invisible, technical, and produces no visible result the user can feel pride in. Over five years of heavy investment, trust in carbon-based sustainability features became fragile — delivering no meaningful loyalty lift for banks.
